Timeshares - What You Need to Know



Timeshare as a concept has been around since the 1960s. It was introduced by a ski resort owner in France. He suggested that owning a set amount of time each year in a resort was a better way to have a vacation than renting. His idea caught on, and timeshare has continually grown in popularity around the world since then, and in particular in the U.S.

So why would someone want to buy and use a timeshare? If you buy a timeshare, you're actually a part owner of the property, and there's no doubt that many people prefer owning to renting. All the property owners split the costs of ownership and maintenance, and usually they will hire a professional manager to look after the resort.

It also means that you're guaranteed time in that resort each year, which can be a big bonus if it's a popular resort. There are also regular offers of extra weeks at a cheap rate for owners. Even better, though, is that you can exchange the week at your resort for a week at someone else's resort, so there's no need to get bored. Timeshares are located all over the world in a huge variety of places and climates, so there's always sure to be somewhere you'd like to visit.

Timeshares also offer some of the best vacations you can find. Most timeshares are of high quality, with luxury features and many extras such as sport facilities. I'm always impressed by the quality of resorts I've visited, and the variety is amazing. I've stayed at a chalet in the Canadian Rockies, luxury beachside apartments in Hawaii, lakeside in New Zealand and in a tranquil bush setting in Australia. All in total comfort, with loads of resort facilities to enjoy.

Some resorts have joint usage agreements with other timeshares, so you can also regularly get cheap weeks at other resorts too. If you don't want to use your week at the resort yourself, you can pass it on to friends or family, as long as the yearly maintenance fees are paid. It doesn't matter whereabouts in the US you are, there is likely to be a timeshare resort available. Timeshares will generally offer you a free tour, and perhaps even a weekend stay for a reduced rate so that you can decide whether or not you like the resort. While you're there, talk to other owners and see how they feel about their timeshare membership. A time share can be a great asset for family vacations, so make sure you take the time to check out whether or not timeshares are for you.
